Floodwise! 4 Years on…

Friday, June 10th, 2011

We love a bit of hands on action – especially when it comes to our beloved waterways in and around The Chimney House…

The very nice people from the River Stewardship co and Groundwork Sheffield are marking the 4th anniversary of the June 2007 floods with 3 flood awareness days within high flood risk communities in Sheffield. The events are part of Sheffield Flood Resilience Network, which aims to raise awareness of flood preparedness and how riverside maintenance can reduce the risk of flooding.

The first is on our doorstep on Sunday 12th June at 10am. (Kelham Island Museum) Expect great tea and coffee and a totally great feel good day out in and around the flora and fauna of Kelham Island. We’ve heard that there may be a touch of Himalayan Balsam pulling if that swings it for you!

Morning

The morning of the Flood Awareness Days will focus on understanding the risks and dangers of flooding, and how local people can prepare for it. Members of the Sheffield Flood Resilience Network will be on hand with leaflets and information at their stalls.

Afternoon

The afternoon of the events will focus on practical conservation work with the River Stewardship Company. The river stewards will be looking for volunteer community members to work on improving a stretch of local waterway, removing litter, invasive vegetation and installing wildlife habitats.

Well maintained rivers help to minimise flood risk, so come along and do your bit to improve your local waterway.

‘Property Oscars’ here we come!!

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

We’re known locally, regionally and nationally for our ‘iconic’ building… glorious red brick free standing ‘house’ with a 93ft chimney soaring high out above Kelham Island. So when we where asked to enter the RICS Awards we jumped straight in.

Known as the region’s ‘Property Oscars’, the awards celebrate the most inspirational regional initiatives and developments in land, property, construction and the environment.

The nominations in each category span a range of companies and projects, from small schemes achieved by the vision of one person to globally recognised developments with significant budgets.

The Chimney House is a finalist in the highly competitive ‘Building Conservation’ category – the entry was complied of a 1,500 word entry – written by LARK and beautifully designed by 93ft.

Sarah

Friday, July 30th, 2010

When house guests arrive at The Chimney House for The Front Room and The Meeting Room we are delighted that  people bombard us with chimney questions… what was the building used for… what did the chimney do… is that the chimney (pointing at it)…why have you got an elephant painted on it?

The answer to the latter … ‘because an elephant called Sarah used to live here’… provokes a stunned look followed by an absolute delight… ‘REALLY???? HERE? and then the story unfolds…

But really you have to come here and find out for yourself the next bit…we’ll be happy to tell you all!!  But in the meantime… here she is as her fabulous eli self… a true beauty and we love her!

Check out Kelham Island signage in the background and you can just see the chimney of the House!
