‘Pure Perfection’ was my comment in the guest book at Maso di Villa…A delicious 6 bedroom country house hotel tucked away up a gated drive in Susegana, Italy.
Winding steeply up an impossibly curious drive peace and tranquility wait for you in abundance at the hands of Chiara and her parents.
Attention to detail is something we receive most compliments for at The Chimney House – for The Meeting Room and for The Pop Up Dining Hall – so to land on a hotel so eloquent in its portrayal of reflecting calm and tiny accuracy in detail was a super and serendipitous treat.
To call Maso di Villa a hotel almost does it an injustice. It’s just like wandering into a family home – where you are given free run of the gardens, grounds, house and veggie patches…At every turn it’s a feast for the senses from the second you check in to the moment you check out.
The story is historically beautiful just like The Chimney House and is a story of rescue and revival – so very similar to us…
A rambling pile of a farmhouse and farm buildings that has stood for 100 years – saved 12 years ago and 4 years spent on the restoration and revival and transformation into a super chic bolt hole for like minded travellers looking for solace and beauty.
Everything in the house has been sourced locally, curiosities and antiquities chosen with care and love and placed in perfect places to be admired and touched. Chiara was keen to say that pieces are always being found from local markets and antique fairs and added to the collection – plates, cups, serving plates, tea pots, coffee pots, spoons, forks….You name it reflects the appreciation of antique style…But they’ve done it in such a smart way – by carefully selecting key pieces that nothing seems jaded or faded.
It was really lovely to see the application of vintage fabrics combined into the bedrooms and living spaces effortlessly – stitched to perfection using laces, ribbons and beautiful examples of vernacular tones and textures. Chiara and her mum make everything you see from cushions, pillows, quilts, throws…
Wherever you look in Maso di Villa flowers, florals and blooms are blossoming everywhere…From the kitchen and market gardens brimming of produce and heavenly scents and tasty treats to the swathes of cut blooms spilling out of every vessels on top of every surface as you move through the house to the wonderful oils on the walls clasped in antique frames of all shapes and sizes. Florals are tended by Chiara’s mum and their shared love of scented beauty and delicate forms is a joy.
Decor has been chosen with fabulous attention – and Chiara’s father – the brains behind the architecture and extremely good vintages of home grown vines has created house wines which are delicate and a reflection of the grounds and the family ethos. We can recommend indulging in a couple of bottles over a simple kitchen supper featuring all home grown and all home-made.
Preserves and compotes for breakfast…Served with warm freshly made bread.
I guess what we’re trying to say is that if The Chimney House was ever a hotel…We’d be looking towards Maso di Villa as a shining example of care, attention, love and ultimately hospitality in a gentle, reflective and deft way. The capability of the family whose care into their brand is a way of life not a job is something that we applaud and wish them luck and love in.
If you are ever 40 mins drive from Venice and find yourself with a spare night – we recommend you seek out Maso di Villa and lay in their grounds and by the pool amongst the Italian sun, swooping Swallows, buzzing bees and outrageously beautiful butterflies and while away the hours in pure perfection…
